FALKIRK v GOVANHILL

This match took place on the ground of the East Stirlingshire Cricket Club at Randyford. The weather was favourable, and a goodly number of spectators passed the gate to witness the match. The ball was kept well in the centre of the field for some time after the "kick off", when the Govanhill carried it well into the Falkirk territory, but any advantage they obtained was neutralized by the ineffectual and erratic shots at goal which their men attempted. The ball was now taken by the Falkirk men right down into the Govanhill lines, where the play was mostly carried on till half-time was called. In the second half the Govanhill assailed the Falkirk goal with spirit, and latterly succeeded in securing a goal, although rather simply. No other score was made up till the finish - Govanhill being successfull by one goal to nothing. The Falkirk men played well, and if they had utilised their "backs" to more advantage, the tables might have been turned. For Falkirk, Neil, Peddie, Leishman (forwards) and Richardson (half-back) played pluckily. The following was the Falkirk team:- Neil, R.Peddie (captain), W.Peddie, Leishman, Gentleman, Taylor (forwards); Richardson, Johnson (half-backs); Service and Buchanan (backs); and McEwan (goal). We were unable to obtain a list of the Govanhill team.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CUP TIE

FALKIRK v CAMPSIE GLEN

The above tie was played at Randyford on Saturday last, in the presence of a large turn-out of spectators, and resulted in a win for the Falkirk team by two goals to none. The home team having won the toss, kicked off at 3.45, the forwards at once taking the ball to their opponent's goal, and smartly passing it through, scoring the first goal one minute after the kick off. During the rest of the game some excellent playing was shown by both sides. A little before time was called the home team showed their superiority by taking the ball up the whole of the field, and by some clever passing, sent it through the goal, thus winning the match by two goals to none. The home team played well together, the following are the players:- Falkirk - R.Peddie (captain), W.Peddie, left; John Taylor, W.Gentleman, centre; James Neill, James Ferguson, right; W.Geddes, half-back; George Richardson, half-back; D.McMillan and R.Service, backs; William Carmichael, goal. FALKIRK v LENZIE

In the football match which was played between the Falkirk and Lenzie clubs at Randyford on Saturday last, the lovers of this invigorating and popular game witnessed a contest which, while animated with that friendly rivalry common to such occasions, was conducted with a degree of skill and precision, creditable in a high degree to those who comprised the various teams. The deservedly high reputation enjoyed by the Lenzie men will have undergone no deterioration from Saturday's performance, whilst the representatives of Falkirk - though this club has been but newly set afoot - manifested a spirit which augurs well for the future. The match, notwithstanding the somewhat inclement nature of the weather and the unfavourable condition of the turf, was watched throughout with unmistakeable interest by the various onlookers. The ball was set off by the home team. The kick was well replied to, but before a minute had elapsed, by splendid passing from centre to back on the part of the Falkirk men, the ball was safely lodged within the strangers' goal. Having again kicked off, Lenzie kept the ball entirely within their own territory till at last after a spirited contest they cleverly secured a goal. With the teams again equal play was resumed, both sides putting forth their best efforts in the endeavour to steal a march on each other; but after a few minutes spent on neutral ground, the strangers, ere half-time was called, became, by a mere accident, once more successful. Having reversed position, both sides scored a goal, the playing of the home team being the while particularly good. The brothers Peddie, who were pitted against M'Gregor and Fisher, the renowned back players for Lenzie, proved themselves to be, by their masterly management of the post committed to their charges, very superior players, a remark which may also apply to Neil, Leishman, and Richardson, and the back play of Walker was exceptionally fine. The match concluded in a win for the strangers by one goal, which, however, was not secured without a severe struggle, as the home team during the latter part of the game were evidently retrieving whatever had been lost, and might have been successful in bringing about a draw had not time been called when success seemed inevitable. The following comprises the names of the local team:- W.Carmichael (goal), R.Service, A.Walker (backs), G.Richardson, W.Gentleman (half-backs), W.Peddie, R.Peddie, J.Taylor, J.Walker, J.Leishman, and J.Neil (forwards).

PETERSHILL v FALKIRK

This match was played on the ground of the latter at Randyford on Saturday afternoon last and resulted in a draw, no goals having been secured. There was nothing conspicuous in the playing of either team except that of John Adam, who was in splendid form as a forward, and likewise W.Carmichael, who guarded the goal with great vigilence. During the first half the home team kept the ball entirely within their own territory, while the same remark in the latter half also applies to the strangers. The game, as contrasted with that of the Saturday previous, was exceedingly tame, but this was due to the very hard state of the ground caused by a frost - a drawbackwhich the strangers seemingly were not slow to take advantage of for the introduction of some rough playing into the contest. On the whole, in comparing the rival teams, Falkirk, considering its youth, held its opponents in check in a highly creditable manner. Agood number of spectators turned out to witness the game. The following are the names of the players:- Petershill Team - James Blair, goal; A.Stark, J.Kein, backs; R.Stoddart (captain), A.Lauder, half-backs; J.Dick, E.Kein, D.Johnston, J.Scobbie, J.M'Allan, H.Webster, forwards. Falkirk Team - Wm.Carmichael, goal; George Richardson, W.Gentleman, backs; John Adam, R.Service, half-backs; Jas.Niel, T.Taylor, J.Taylor, W.Binnie, W.Peddie, R.Peddie (captain), forwards.

FALKIRK v KELVINBANK

On Saturday last the Falkirk Football Club maintained the series of matches, which during the late storm were wholly put a stop to, when an interesting contest took place with the Kelvinbank men (Glasgow). The weather, on account of the high wind, was not favourable for football, though otherwise very pleasant. The Kelvinbank team having won the toss, decided to play with the wind. Before two minutes had elapsed a rather easily secured goal was obtained by the strangers. The play was inclined to be a little out of order, and nothing particular tranpired during the first half, the game standing in favour of the strangers by three goals, the home team never having obtained entrance within the enemy's territory, a result probably due to the fact of the wind being dead against the Falkirk men. Ends having been reversed, curious to say the wind considerably abated, and shifted its quarter away to the south-west, thus presenting the "Bairns" from obtaining the advantage enjoyed by their opponents. The play, however, now became stiffer, but the Falkirk men were by no means in their best form, a deterioration which may be largely attributed to the want of practice caused by the late storm. In the first half the contest was devoid of any noteworthy feature other than the very superior playing of J.Richardson, as back, and J.Law, as half-back, who, although having little style, played with an enthusiasm which made him the most serviceable man on the field. we understand that an arrangement has been made to play a second match, on the 12th of next month, with the Lenzie Club, and from the reputation which the two clubs when matched formerly obtained, and from the fact that the proceeds of the drawings are intended to be devoted to the funds in support of the Industrial School, it is expected that the match will be a more than usually interesting one.

FALKIRK v GOVANHILL

On Saturday last a football match between the Falkirk Football Club and the Govanhill took place on the ground of the former at Randyford. The ground was in splendid condition, and the weather was all that could be desired. The kick-off took place at 4:15, and not minutes had elapsed when a goal was secured by the home team. The play throughout was most regular, passing being a particularly good feature on both sides, and the struggle of both teams pretty equal. At the second half, the Falkirk men completely overcame their opponents, and at the close the game stood - Falkirk 2 : Govanhill 1. For the former club Messrs J.Neil and J.Leishman at their usual posts did good service, while Mr J.Richardson, as formerly, kept up his commendable style. Mr J.Law, we noticed, had more style than formerly, and did equally good service. for the Govanhill team each respective man played and kept steady at their posts. there was a large turn-out of spectators, and the day's playing was as successful as any which has been witnessed this season, the reason being due to the well-matched strength of the rival teams.

LENZIE v FALKIRK

The return match between these clubs was played at Lenzie on Saturday, and after a very enjoyable game, resulted in favour of the home team by two goals to none. Falkirk, losing the toss, kicked off against a slight wind, but the ball was immediately returned, a raid was made on the Falkirk goal, and a corner kick was gained; but although splendidly placed by Borland, the strangers managed to keep their fortress safe, and in return had a run into home territory. Good runs were made by both sides during the first half - the backs playing in good form, and keeping the goals safe till shortly before half-time was called. A scrimmage took place in front of the stranger's goal, and Farquhar put the ball through. During the second half Lenzie played much better, and had many corner-kicks, from one of which by Borland, S.Broadfoot headed a goal, and although Falkirk wrought hard, and got the ball up two or three times, they were unable to score. Borland, Baird and M'Gregor, forwards; and S.Broadfoot, W.Paterson, half-backs played a splendid game for Lenzie, and Neil, Leishman and Peddie, forwards; Walker, back;  and Carmichael, goal; did good service for Falkirk. A match for the benefit of Falkirk Certified Industrial School is to be played on the ground of the Falkirk club on Saturday, 12th curt., between the same clubs, when a good contest is expected. Teams:- Lenzie - J.Paterson, goal; M.Broadfoot and Archers, backs; S.Broadfoot and W.Paterson, half-backs; Baird, Borland, Farquhar, Agar, Cree and M'Gregor, forwards. Falkirk - W.Carmichael, goal; A.Walker and Richardson, backs; J.Law and R.Service, half-backs; J.Neil, J.Leishman, J.Ferguson, R.Johnston, W.Peddie and J.Taylor, forwards.

Lost Football Grounds of Falkirk District - Blinkbonny Park

$
0
0
For most of this week I have been looking for the location of Falkirk FC's second permanent home: Blinkbonny Park. All of my life the only Blinkbonny Parkin Falkirk has been a public space between Gartcows Road and the railway line close to the High Station. Now there is a substantial problem with this being the ground where Falkirk played teams such as Dumbarton and Renton in Scottish Cup matches over nearly three and a half seasons, namely that most of the sporting references to this Blinkbonny Park in the local press are about tobogganing!

Yes, it has a very pronounced slope.

The biggest problem that we have is that Falkirk played at Blinkbonny almost exactly halfway between the 1860 and 1896 OS surveys, so the ground is missing from the best sources available. A secondary problem is that Blinkbonny [and variant spellings] is a somewhat common name, so much so that there was another one [and another Blinkbonny Park] in the district, in Slamannan. So sorting out which references were to which Blinkbonny/ie took time and patience, plus the multiple references to sales of Turnips at Blinkbonny Farm never once mentioned its location.

Blinkbonnie, and Blinkbonnie Park, Slamannan 1896.

Therefore, as ever, you have to look wider than the football to find the parts of the jigsaw puzzle not staring you in the face. And so some five years after Falkirk FC had moved to Brockville, in 1890, Falkirk Town Council started looking for a suitable piece of land in order to create a public park for the residents of the town. In the reports of the Falkirk Herald of the time it was reported that they had had several possibilities and had sounded out the landowners as to the terms were a purchase to be necessary: among the possibilities was Blinkbonny.

On Saturday April 19th 1890 the FH reported that

"... the committee were strongly of opinion that they could not get a better site for a park than the ground at Blinkbonny. It was splendidly situated, and its only drawback was its distance from the town. The Committee had visited Blinkbonny, and they were of opinion that if they could get that part lying to the west of the road leading to Greenhorn's Well, it would make a splendid park. The land was very similar to the town's muir, and if they could make arrangements with Mr Forbes [of Callendar] in the way of excambion, they might get the one for the other. The land had special advantages for a public park. In one corner was situated Greenhorn's Well, and near it was a natural hollow, which by being flooded, would make a splendid skating pond. ... The northern boundary ran along the Bantaskin wall, and formed a natural boundary".

The simple fact that they were looking at the land west of Greenhorn's Well, and that Blinkbonny was bounded to the South by the Railway Line and to the North by the Bantaskine Estate, and stretching from Drossie Road presumably to the estate of Glenfuir House means that Blinkbonny (Park) in the 1880s and 1890s was much bigger than the current park.

The area known to Falkirk Bairns as Blinkbonny in the late 19th Century

This, though, is still a huge piece of land, and just because a passer-by in 1882 would notice the throng of a football match, means nothing to anybody nowadays, the entire area is built over by the Windsor Road housing estate, and very little of it looks remotely suitable for a Scottish Cup Match.

And it was here that I was incredibly fortunate in coming across an article about a dispute over several 'rights of way' which were regularly used by Camelonites going to and from the different parts of Falkirk. In the summer of 1891 some of these 'rights of way' were blocked by the landowners and it took the law to settle which parties were in the right.

The single most important path/right of way here

"opens from the southern bank of the Forth & Clyde Canal near to Lock 16, at Glenfuir Lodge and passes between the estates of Glenfuir and Bantaskin, and thence through the estate of Callendar, joining Maggie Wood's Loan, near Blinkbonny. The thoroughfare is still open from the entrance at Glenfuir Lodge till a point a little beyond East Bantaskin pit, a new working which is presently being formed". [Falkirk Herald Sat 25th July 1891]

The part here from the Lodge to the mine is shown clearly as a path on the 1860 map, and equates exactly with modern day Blinkbonny Road.

1860 - Ordnance Survey

2017 - Google Maps

And the second part of the 'right of way' from the East Bantaskin Pit [renamed Camelon Pit No. 2 when opened in 1895] to Maggie Wood's Loan follows the path, almost exactly of the current Windsor Road.

1896 - Ordnance Survey & 2016 - Bing Maps Hybrid from the marvellous NLS Maps Site.

The reason that the course of this 'right of way' is so important to Falkirk fans and Scottish Football historians in general is what the Falkirk Herald went on to report.

"On Wednesday one of our representatives visited the district, and passed along the disputed road. Judging from its appearance, it appeared to have been in use for a considerable period. At one side of the thoroughfare is a hedge, while the other side is not fenced. The road does not appear to have been largely used of late, judging from its grassy surface. It passes along the north side of the park which was formerly occupied by the Falkirk Football Club, and when matches were played at Blinkbonny a great number of the spectators came from Camelon and Lock 16 by the road which has now been closed. Since the club left Blinkbonny the road has been chiefly used as a nearer approach to the High Station, and if it be closed great inconvenience will, it is stated, be caused to those who have been in the habit of using it for that purpose. ... our representative was informed that the road was formerly known as "the old mill road" and was largely used by people going to the Union Canal and the High Station".

If I have added everything correctly, and not misread everything, this would put the Blinkbonny Park somewhere in the vicinity of Balmoral Street, Falkirk - Google Street View.

After Falkirk FC left Blinkbonny the ground was taken over by Erin Rovers [who themselves were born out of Falkirk Harp] the local "Irish" team who did not last for much more than a season.

FALKIRK JUNIOR v LENZIE JUNIOR

Encouraged by the success which attended the first fifteen of the Lenzie Football Club while pitted against Falkirk, a match between the above clubs was arranged and took place on Saturday at Randyford, the ground of the former. For junior elevens, the two teams were as well matched as were the seniors, and the play of Saturday was quite as good as during the successful game which was played between the seniors some time ago. In the contest some dexterous playing was manifested, reflecting no small degree of credit upon both sides. No goals were secured and although at intervals the home team made several raids upon the enemy's territory, it cannot but be said that the strangers had the superiority. During the first half the Falkirk men kicked against the wind, but by no means to such good purpose as did the strangers in the second half. Some showers of rain fell during the progress of the game, but did not seriously interfere with it, and a considerable number of spectators turned out. For the home team J.M'Allum perhaps made the cleanest runs towards the enemy's goal, while the playing of T.Hamilton, W.Binnie, A.Ferguson, and T.Taylor was altogether of a masterly description. F.Archer, the captain of the Lenzie club, made one or two splendid kicks during the play in his position as back, and P.Proudfoot and P.Cree were equally serviceable. Teams :- Lenzie- Goal, H.A.Walker; backs, A.M.Barretto, O.Burk; half-backs, H.Chalmers, J.K.Walker; forwards, F.Archer, P.Proudfoot, F.A.Plae, W.Bremner, J.Forrester, P.Cree. Falkirk - Goal, W.McNair, backs, L.Watson, H.Smith; half-backs, G.Richardson, W.Gentleman; forwards, W.Binnie, T.Hamilton, J.Bennett, J.M'Allum, T.Taylor, A.Ferguson.

Notes - J.McAllum was also spelt McCallum in match reports, the Falkirk goalkeeper at this point was actually David McNair, the paper made an error.

"Many of the old Falkirk supporters will regret the demise of old "Lewey" Watson, who about 30 years ago was one of the keenest and most enthusiastic members of the club. He was a notable figure in the days when "Bob" Bishop was secretary, and when the A.G.M. was held in the big room o the old Newmarket Tavern. "Lewey" was a keen critic, but his heart was always with the "Bairns," and up to a few months before his death he showed an interest in his team's welfare."
